Slick SamsungTV Design Gets Serious Challenge From Philips

TP Vision, who secured the IP and rights to manufacture Philips branded TVs, has revealed a spectacular new TV design that analysts claim will be will be a real threat to the much heralded unique Samsung TV design revealed at the 2013 CES show. The two new TVs are set to sell in Australia later this year. The retail price of the 46″ is set to be sub $3,000 and a 55″ model will sell for between $4,000 and $4,500.

The new 1400 Hz Philips DesignLine TV features a seamless, gradient black sheet of glass that hides the screen in off-mode, it has no stand or neck or a visible frame unlike the Samsung TV, which is built around a heavy metal frame. The screen can easily be propped up against a wall due to the single sheet of glass design.

Manufactured from a single seamless sheet of glass the display delivers a translucent flow from black opaque to transparent, which becomes invisible when watching TV.

The TV image floats onto the glass screen delivering an extremely sharp image claims the manufacturers. The front display sheet of glass sits on top of a high resolution LED screen, which is powered by a dual-core processor with the Philips Perfect Pixel HD engine powering the TV output.

The TV has micro Dimming and local contrast that improves the screen’s unique contrast display. A 3D Max feature uses active 3D technology in combination with the high-speed display to create a “unique” 3D viewing experience in Full HD resolution said TP Vision.

The Philips DesignLine TV will be offered in two screen sizes both fitted with Philips Ambilight LEDs to heighten the floating screen effect for the Smart TV.

“By consciously designing a system which offers implicit performance, but in a language focused on interior context we offer a true Object of Desire,” said TP Vision’s Senior Creative Director, Rod White.

The designers claim that their new Smart TV compliments even the most contemporary homes. The gradient black effect running down the glass panel starts at opaque black turning transparent by the floor, which should turn invisible when watching TV. Created to create the impression of a floating display, the effect is furthered by three sides of Philips Ambilight XL technology, which fits LEDs behind the TV to project colour onto the walls behind. These colours change with the content currently showed on the screen.

Leaning against the wall, the solid glass sheet of the Philips DesignLine TV is also designed to conceal the screen when in standby mode, potentially turning the TV set into a piece of contemporary artwork.

Aside from the design, the Philips DesignLine offers a Full 1,920 x 1080p HD resolution, as well as being 3D capable. Using 3D Max active shutter glasses technology, the TV can offer 2D to 3D conversion, 3D depth adjustment for 3D personalisation and the option to play dual-screen multiplayer in full-screen resolutions.

With full Smart TV functionality, the Philips DesignLine is in-built with Wi-Fi connectivity for catch-up TV, internet browsing and access to the Philips Smart TV stores’ content.

The Philips DesignLine offers four HDMI and three USB ports for wired connectivity, and can be controlled using the Philips Remote with keyboard and pointer. Users can also download the Philips MyRemote app from the Apple App Store or for Android from Google Play. The app offers a remote control for the Philips DesignLine, screen sharing from tablets and smartphones, Wi-Fi Smart Screen and access to the Electronic Programme Guide from the smart device.

The TV Company behind the new TV is 70% owned by TPV Technology, headquartered in Taiwan, and 30% by Royal Philips Electronics, headquartered in the Netherlands. TP Vision employs close to 3,300 people in several locations around the globe.
