The Australian smartphone market which is dominated by a handful of players is booming with sales on par with the traditional mobile handset market claims GFK.

The European research Company said that the value growth of smartphones slightly surpassed the decline of mobile handsets, resulting in an overall growth of 2.3% for the telecoms sector in the third quarter.

Among the dominant players are Apple, HTC, and Research in Motion with their Blackberry.

The demand for smartphones over traditional handsets is expected to continue in Australia as brands like Motorola and Samsung roll out new Google Android based phones.

In the past and prior to the launch of the Apple iPhone the Australian smartphone market was dominated by Windows Mobile based devices. However this platform is now in fast decline say researchers with Microsoft’s inability to ship Windows Mobile 7, doing damage to their Smartphone market share it seems.

Some analysts are claiming that the problems Microsoft have with their mobile OS offering is terminal and even if Microsoft is able to ship Windows Mobile 7 soon, the damage might already be done.

New research from Gartner show that Android OS based phones, are gaining on Windows Mobile (CE) platform with sales in Australia tipped to be down significantly according to Telstra sources.

Windows Mobile fell from 11.1 percent of the market in the third quarter of last year, to 7.9% this year.  That’s losing over 3% of the overall market and almost 30% of their market.

Meanwhile Android is just getting its legs, having signed up Microsoft Windows stalwarts including HTC which made 80% of Windows Mobile phones last year.  This year, Gartner estimates that Android phones have made up 4% of the market this year.

Gartner’s report also showed Apple’s iPhone gaining slightly on Blackberry, which both saw impressive gains.
