Sony Announces Xperia Play For Oz

Coming with more of a whimper than a bang, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone, whose Australian launch was delayed due to the effects of the Japanese tsunami, has finally got a release date of 8 June down under.

Smartphones are currently raining cats and dogs, and this one is claimed to appeal to those looking for a good gaming experience.

The Xperia Play, which mimics the PSP experience, will come pre-installed with six games: Star Battalion, FIFA 10, Madden NFL 11 and SIMS 3, Bruce Lee and Crash Bandicoot.

The phone has more than 60 games specifically built for the Xperia Play platform.

Brendan Johnston, md of Sony Ericsson Oceania, said: “We believe that the Xperia Play is a game changer and now we’re able to provide Australia with the chance to make its own mind up. Xperia Play provides a first of its kind gaming experience on the latest version of Android. What more could you need or want?”

No pricing details were released, but the phone will be carried by both Optus and Telstra, with Vodafone promised in the future.
Optus is offering the phone at $0 upfront on a $79 cap which will cost $1738 on a 24 month plan and includes $900 of calls and 3GB data per month. Other capped plans are also available, and Optus is also offering 3 bonus games on top of the pre-loaded 6 for buyers who purchase before 30 July.
