Sony’s current V25, 8″ netbook will set you back over $2,000, now the struggling Japanese Company who has never made a cent selling notebooks is set to have another crack at the netbook market, with the launch of a new Vaio W-Series of mini-notebooks. The new models are expected in Australia soon.
What Sony is now saying is that their first attempt was “not for real” and that the launch of their new W-Series is the “real deal” when it comes to Sony playing in the netbook market.
And there is even a chance that the new models, could come at less than $1,500, which for Sony is a real compromise.
The W-Series PC measures 26.7cm high by 3.3cm wide by 18cm deep, and weighs in at 1.27 kilo. It comes in three colours – berry pink, sugar white and cocoa brown – and sports a 10-inch widescreen display, which is a pretty common size for netbooks. The screen comes in 1,366 x 768 which is not bad for a netbook.

It has 2 USB ports, VGA Out, and Ethernet ports, as well as a webcam and multimedia slots for Memory Stick Duo and SD memory.
It has a 1.66-GHz N280 Intel Atom processor and 1 Gb of system memory, and a 160-GB, 5,400-RPM hard drive. The W-Series has Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g, and Bluetooth technology. It comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed.
It also includes Sony’s VAIO Multimedia Suite (VAIO Media plus Multimedia Streaming Software), as well as a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2009 and a 60-day trial of Microsoft Home and Student 2007.
Now here comes the sting. In the US the new netbook will sell for $500 but if it is anything like their 11″ OLED TV display which sells for $6,999 in Australia, compared to $2,499 in the USA, the new netbook device could end up costing over $2,000 in Australia.
