Sony Launch FREE TV From Anywhere In The Word

Sony has launched LocationFree TV in Europe, so you can watch your home TV channels from anywhere in the world.

After months of hype and anticipation, Sony has finally managed to launch its rather cool LocationFree TV which allows one to watch, record and play back your local favourite TV programmes no matter where on the planet.

The idea is that LocationFree TV ‘redirects’ your local TV shows or recordings to your PC, laptop or, best of Play Station Portable) so that you can watch them irrespective of how far from home you are. You can even remotely set up future recordings. At the heart of the concept is a ‘Base Station’ box that sits connected to a broadband internet connection communicate wirelessly with your video gear. It has connection points for up to two separate AV sources such as Foxtel + receiver or DVD player, and can be plugged into an existing home network or establish a wireless link to a PSP, notebook or desktop PC over a 50 metre range.

With the LocationFree software then installed on your PSP or PC, you can then control those connected AV devices via the Internet no matter where you are, with the video being sent back over the internet for your enjoyment. The Base Station can even monitor the bandwidth of your broadband connection and optimise the bitrate of the AV stream accordingly.

Although all this sounds complicated on paper, it’s actually blindingly simple once you see it in action (which we have). And if it manages to deliver on all of its potential without being ruined by bugs, it really does have the potential to make the world even smaller than it already is. And lets hope that Sony bring the service to Australia.

But then again it is Sony Australia that look after this region and boring press releases and UN imaginative products are more there speed. Remember the Poms now have a low cost Sony LCD TV with built in PVR and Hi Fi Speakers we still have plain old boring LCD TV’s.
