A Taiwanese Company who last month aquired the Philips LCD business has won a major contract to produce Sony’s new LCD TVs.
Sony who made a big entry into the LCD market last month are outsourcing production to Taiwanese Company TPV Technology who last month aquired Royal Philips Electronics’ LCD TV busines. The company will initally manufacture Sony 32-inch LCD TVs, according to sources in Taiwan
The company will begin shipments to Japan soon with 13,000 units expected to be shipped this year, sources said. TPV Technology declined to comment on the news.According to a report from Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), the acquistion of Philips’ LCD TV business will help TPV enter into the fast-growing flat-panel TV segment, with its share of the market estimated to grow from zero to 8% by 2008, the report said.
TPV is the world’s largest LCD monitor manufacturer, with the company stating it shipped 7.62 million units in the first half of this year, grabbing 16.2% of the global market.
Earlier this year, Taiwan-based LCD TV maker Amtran Technology also received orders from Sony for 20-and 26-inch LCD TVs, the market sources said. Toshiba is also evaluating whether to place orders with Taiwan-based LCD TV makers while Taiwan-based Kolin is currently in discussion with Japan-based Mitsubishi and Hitachi on OEM/ ODM business, the market sources added.
