Sony PS4 Sales Zoom Past 10M Worldwide

Sony announced at the 2014 Gamescom Trade Fair that it has sold over 10 million Playstation 4 games consoles worldwide in less than 9 months, demonstrating new games and features, saying sales are growing at the fastest rate in Playstation hardware history.

Boasting of strong support from users, third party developers and games publishers worldwide, Sony says its 10M PS4 sales have seen more than 30 million PS4 software sales in retail stores and via Playstation Store digital downloads.

Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment said: “The responses we have received for the PS4 system’s unique gameplay experiences powered by the network, along with its vast game portfolio has been phenomenal, and I am absolutely delighted that PS4 was able to reach this commemorative milestone in less than 9 months.”

“We’re so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation gamers worldwide, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and services in the months ahead.”

Australian NPD Group data indicates the PS4 was the No.1 next-gen console in Australia at the week ending the 3rd of August, 2014, with more data showing that, “on average, PS4 has sold 2:1 units comparatively to its nearest competitor month-on-month since its launch on 29 November 2013”, although pointing to NPD Group Australia data for the week ending the 1st of December 2013 rather than any 2014 stats for this second claim.

Playstation TV is also coming to Australia and New Zealand from the 14th of November, 2014, with an RRP of $149.95. Playstation TV uses “Remote Play” functionality allowing “players the freedom to play their favourite PS4 games on a separate television”, as well as access to a “vast lineup of PS Vita, PSP and PS One classic titles”.

Sony says its PS4 games portfolio continues to expand with anticipated new titles including LittleBigPlanet 3, first person shooter/adventure Destiny, SingStar: Ultimate Party, racing game Driveclub, horror-themed game Until Dawn, shoot-em-up Alienation, survival game Wild, platform adventure Tearaway Unfolded, among several other titles demonstrated at the Gamescom 2014 Trade Fair in Cologne, Germany, as well as titles from independent developers such as Minecraft, Hohokum and Counterspy.

A PS4 System Software Update 2.0 is due in the Australian Spring, and promises to “improve on the best-in-class innovation gamers have come to expect from PlayStation with many new features designed to take the central experience of sharing and interaction to a whole new level”.

Sony also promises the continue enhancing the PS4’s network features for better gaming experiences, including the ability to upload gameplay footage directly to YouTube, and a new “Share Play” feature that “allows players to enjoy gameplay with their friends just as if they are in the same room, such as remotely taking over a friend’s controller to help them through tricky sections of a game.”

The PS4 is currently on sale in 100 countries and regions worldwide.
