Sony has unveiled the world’s first Blu-Ray notebook, offering high-definition read and write optical storage capability.
The release of the VGN-AR18GP VAIO notebook also represents Sony’s first Blu-ray product in Australia.
Blu-ray is the latest development in DVD technology and allows you to store up to five times the capacity of an average DVD disc.
“Appealing to those on the cutting-edge right now, we expect to see Blu-Ray become a mass market format within this decade,” Sony Australia deputy managing director Carl Rose said in a statement.
The AR18 is being presented by Sony as a complete package for editing and storing HD content. The notebook allows users to edit and burn HD footage in native 1080 resolution. It can input, output and display content in 1080 resolution.
Specifications include a 17-inch widescreen display, 160GB of hard disk capacity, an Intel Core Duo T2600 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 GT graphics card with 256MB of dedicated video memory and a built-in camera and microphone for IP communication.
Sony is also launching another notebook to coincide with the AR18’s release in July. The AR15 features a dual layer DVD drive and will have a similar design to the AR18.
Recommended retail prices for the AR18 and AR15 are $5499 and $3999 respectively.
