Stay Healthy With New Smart Lunch Box

Like the idea of a smart lunch box which automatically keeps warm food warm and cold food cold? Well this is the winning concept in the 2006 Electrolux Design Lab Awards.

The Design Lab challenge for students was to design a household appliance that would contribute to a healthier lifestyle in the future, given that obesity is a key public health challenge of the 21st century.

Metin Kaplan, the Turkish designer of the winning ‘Nevale’ mobile food carrier concept, wished to design a product that would encourage people to take healthy meals with them on the go. He figured more people would do so if they could keep their food at the right temperature and this, in turn, would reduce the need for fast-food restaurants.

The Nevale is based on the shape of an antique Middle Eastern food container built in layers to transport homemade food. The updated version is also built in layers, but its hood features a digital control screen to control the temperatures of the four layers. Each layer works independently, so you could take soup in one and frozen yoghurt in the other.

The jury members judging the hundreds of designs in the competition included Australia’s Tetsuya Wakuda.
