A guilt-free, suds-free dish washer is now a reality thanks to the inventive mind of University of Technology Sydney design student, Alexandra Gilmour. Her ‘Swash’ dish washing machine has been selected as one of 12 finalists in the Australian Design Award-Dyson Student Award.
“My aim was to develop a new cleaning method and innovative solution to existing models that would reduce water usage/wastage and provide a hygienically clean result. This was achieved by using high temperature steam as a cleaning agent which eliminates detergent use and nanotechnology for continual water filtration for reuse,” student designer, Gilmour said.
The Australian Design Award-Dyson Student Award is the student arm of Standards Australia’s Australian Design Awards. This year’s 12 finalists were selected from 90 entrants by an international panel of experts in design and technology.
“The Australian Design Award-Dyson Student Award is a program that puts student talent in the spotlight, and provides a bridge from academia to industry,” said Standards Australia’s Manager of the Australian Design Awards, Stephanie Watson.
“The Australian Design Awards and Dyson partnership is about supporting young designers who share Dyson’s philosophy of complete design; developing products that provide significant solutions and don’t just focus on the aesthetics,” said Managing Director Dyson SEA., Ross Cameron.
The ‘Swash’ will be in the running for a gold, silver or bronze position at the awards night on Friday 19 May.
