Take Off To Australian Landmarks With Qantas VR App

A new virtual reality app from Qantas is giving customers the opportunity to discover and explore famous Australian landmarks.

Destinations featured in the Qantas VR app include Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the Northern Territory, with Qantas working alongside the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Board, the Film and Photography Consultative Committee and Grainger Films to produce the first ever drone footage allowed to be captured at the site.

“Our aim with the new virtual reality app is to connect with travelers by showcasing parts of Australia they may not be familiar with,” said Qantas Group executive brand, marketing, corporate affairs Olivia Worth.

Qantas has previously trialed virtual reality in-flight, using Samsung Gear VR in 2015 to give an industry-first VR experience to customers in first class and Qantas lounges.

“Customers loved our trial of VR headsets last year, but we wanted to take it to another level and make it more accessible. Anyone with an iPhone or Android phone can take a virtual tour of Kakadu National Park, for instance, then book a flight directly from the app and see it in person,” said Mrs Wirth.

Locations in the Northern Territory feature prominently in the app due to a partnership with Tourism Northern Territory and Voyages. Other videos include an ‘escape’ to Hamilton Island, a tour of Sydney Harbour and a Harbour Bridge climb experience.

The Qantas VR app is available now for Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Google Cardboard, and can also be viewed in 2D directly on smartphones.
