Telstra BigPond Movies Exclusive To Wi Fi Android Tablets Coming Soon

EXCLUSIVE: Telstra is set to launch a brand new Wi Fi movie and TV service exclusively for Android tablets, the new application will not be made available for Apple iPads.

Set to be launched in late April the new content application allows Android tablet owners to stream content via Wi Fi only. 3G and 4G services have been disabled due to concerns over costs associated with the downloading of high bandwidth files.

Ben Kinealy Director of IPTV, T-Box, Pay TV and Video at Telstra said “We are currently testing several Android tablets and we are confident that we can launch the new service exclusive to Android tablets by the end of April.”

Android device owners will be able to access the same content that is available via the T Box application that is currently being used by Panasonic, Samsung and LG.

According to Telstra retail executives, Telstra is currently focusing on supporting Android devices due to the higher profit margins gained from selling Android smartphones and tablets.

Kinealy claims users will have instant access to content if they are on a “good” Wi Fi network compliments to Widevine technology, which will compress and stream content quickly to devices.

Yesterday Telstra executives demonstrated their latest content offering running on a new Panasonic Viera plasma TV. The Telstra BigPond Movie application which has been embedded onto an on chipset delivers content “significantly” quicker than either a Samsung or LG TV which is running the same application Kinealy said.
