Running on the Telstra Next G network, the Galaxy S II will set new benchmarks for mobile handset internet speeds in Australia.

Warwick Bray, executive director, Telstra Mobile Product said:”We’re delighted to confirm that Telstra will bring the powerful Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone to our customers in July.”

The Galaxy S II is being teamed with Telstra’s HSPA+ network and will support download speeds up to twice as fast as those available on competitor networks in Australian capitals and selected areas, enabling users to access the mobile web faster, stream video with less buffering, and access social networks more quickly.

Bray said: “We think our customers are going to love this super-thin smartphone which features an extraordinarily vivid 4.3 inch screen and one of the best cameras we have seen on a phone.”

Optus has already announced that it is offering the smartphone on pre-order at $5 per month on a $59 plan in a package worth $700 one month earlier on 1 June.

Asked if Telstra will be announcing similar pricing, a spokesperson for Telstra said the company was confirming that it is to be a carrier of the new phone due to the amount of interest the smartphone’s launch had created, but would not be announcing pricing or in-store availability until a little closer to launch.

The dual core smartphone is being launched to the Australian media tonight at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney.
