Telstra is set to deliver the fastest iPhone 3GS in the world after announcing their new iPhone pricing as well as a major upgrade to their NextG network, that they claim will leave Optus and Vodafone reeling when it comes to pure network speed.
Telstra claim that they have twice the speed of their rivals and those consumers who buy from them will have the advantage of its 7.6 megabits-per-second Next G network.
Telstra says Next G iPhone 3GS users can download an MP3 audio track in around 10 seconds, or a 9MB file or document in around 20 seconds “about twice as fast as if you team the device with a 3.6Mbps mobile network”.
Telstra waited almost until the last minute 8.36pm last night to reveal its pricing (under embargo until this morning) for the new 16- and 32GB handsets, and the older 8GB model. Unlike its rivals, it appears not be offering tethering, a feature that enables the new iPhones to be used as broadband modems to connect a laptop or PC to the Internet; there’s certainly no mention of it in the Telstra brochure.
The No. 1 carrier is offering the flagship 32GB iPhone 3G S for zero upfront and $150 a month on its “Ultimate” plan, which includes up to 2000 minutes of voice calls, 2000 SMS messages and 150MB of data. That compares with $114 a month at Vodafone and $99 at Optus for the same model, both on zero-upfront plans.
At Telstra the 16GB model is $100 a month on a zero-upfront basis, compared with $69 at Vodafone; while the older 8GB model goes for $60 a month about
$1 more than Optus and Vodafone are charging.
