Telstra is taking on the likes of YouTube with the launch of its own online video-sharing site dubbed WotNext.
Unlike YouTube, however, the new site will only allow original content – with clips checked by moderators before posting. The videos can then be viewed free online or downloaded to a mobile phone for $1.
Telstra also says it will reward content creators with 50 percent revenue for any clips posted – as long as they are Telstra mobile customers. Each time their video is downloaded to a mobile phone (for a $1 charge) Telstra mobile customers earn 50 cents.
However, non-Telstra customers can earn credit which they can convert into cash if they move their mobile service to Telstra, the company says.
“WotNext gives Australians the chance to get ‘rich and famous’ for letting their creative juices flow,” said Telstra’s Bill Obermeier.
“We are excited about breaking the boundaries in this space and delivering something truly unique,” he added.
