Good news for Nokia today: its Ovi Store has grown 800 per cent in the last year on the back of a slew of new smartphones hitting the market like its N8, C6-01, and newly announced X7. Angry Birds, Facebook more popular apps in Ovi OZ store.

Users now download 5 million apps per day, a major feat for a company who suffered in the smartphone phone rankings as Android and Apple flourished.
And Ovi’s Aussie customers are loving Angry Birds, Facebook, eBuddy and Skype in particular. Ovi is currently the third biggest app store in the world by revenue.
There are around 200 million Symbian users worldwide and the Finnish brand has high hopes for the OS, buoyed by its recent performance both here and abroad, and plans to ship 150m Symbian handsets over the next few years, as well as even more on the upcoming Microsoft Windows 7 platform, revealed Tero Ojanpera, Nokia’s Exec VP of Services.
Ovi apps catalogue now numbers around 40,000 apps, with about 1,000 added a week, although they are calling on developers to jump on the Symbian bandwagon.
“Developers have an immediate opportunity to reach consumers worldwide and capitalise on the approximately 150 million Symbian devices we plan to ship in the coming years,” Ojanpera said.
“This momentum continues to demonstrate consumers’ appetite for Nokia’s apps, and will help us plan the future apps store experience for improved and new Symbian devices, as well as Nokia smartphones based on the planned collaborative opportunities with Microsoft.”
Other popular apps downloaded from its Australian store are Fruit Ninja and Snaptu.
“In about one year, Nokia’s Ovi Store has gone from approximately 1 m downloads per day to up to 5 million downloads per day today, and the velocity appears to be increasing – fuelled largely by Series 40 and new Symbian devices,” said Josh Martin, senior analyst, Strategy Analytics.
