TomTom To Battle Google Navigation On Android Turf

TomTom’s GPS is coming to Android.

At the IFA show in Berlin, TomTom showed off its GPS app for Android devices. The app hosts TomTom’s navigation, map and traffic technologies in an interface designed for smartphones.
 
According to Google’s Andy Rubin, 900,000 Android devices are activated daily and it is essential for TomTom to nab a piece of that share, otherwise Google’s no-cost navigation runs unopposed.

“We want to make TomTom content and services available to as many devices and platforms as we can,” says Chris Kearney, Vice President, TomTom Asia Pacific. “Bringing TomTom navigation to Android smartphones is, therefore, a significant milestone for us.”

As of late, TomTom has been focussing on smartphones as it launched a universal hands-free car kit.

TomTom plans on releasing the app in October of 2012.
