Toshiba Forced To Rethink TV Strategy In OZ

Toshiba, who had originally planned to launch their new “no glasses” 3D Cell TV, in Australia by Xmas has been forced to rethink their strategy after Toshiba Japan eliminated the Cell TV from their line up due to the high cost of the technology.Instead the Japanese company is set to launch a range of new TV and digital A/V products including their first 3D TV offerings in the elite Cinema series.

Executives said that they changed its previously announced plans to introduce its high-end Cell TV for 3D this year, in favour of a lower-priced, somewhat lesser-featured offering.

One of the new 3D models set to be launched in Australia is the WX800 3D LED TV which will be shown at CEDIA in the USA next week.

“As we move into 2011, you will see a strong expansion of the use of 3D. Our offering will include unique Toshiba 3D enhancement technologies.” a Toshiba spokesperson said.

Other new products tipped for Australia include the VX700 Cinema-series 1080p LED LCD TVs featuring most of the features of the 3D WX800 models, minus the 3D capability; the UL605 edge-lit LED LCD TV series featuring a 1.4-inch panel depth, and new design-focused frame; the SL400 720p edge-lit LCD TV series; and  a BDX3000 3D Blu-ray Disc player.

On option for Australia is a 46-inch and 55-inch WX800 LED models which has 3D, 1080p resolution, ClearFrame 200Hz motion processing, a single panel of glass and flush-front floating bezel design, and an ultra-thin (less than 1.2 inches) profile.

The LED edge lighting features an ultra-high-contrast (7 million: 1) picture, with minimal motion blurring using ClearFrame 200Hz technology. Both sets include built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

To support the 3D capability of their TV’s Toshiba Australia is set to introduce the BDX3000 3D Blu-ray Disc player which includes full 1080p/24 fps output; DVD with up-conversion to near-HD 1080p quality; built-in Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g/n) and Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential support; 7.1-channel analogue outputs; a USB port; and SD/SDHC card slot to play AVCHD video, JPEG photos an MP3/WMA audio files.

The VX700 Cinema series, which does not have a 3D capability has features which include LED edge lighting, a 5 million:1 dynamic contrast ratio, ClearFrame 100Hz technology, and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Screen sizes include 46 inches and 55 inches.
