TV Still Top – Internet Not, Say Youths

TV is still tops for teens, wiping the floor with web surfers.

The average Australian child watches almost 15 hours of content on the box every week, claims a youth survey, with just half this figure spent on the net.

Children spend 7.8 hours a week online, which is surprise result considering the vast amount of entertainment on offer including games, movies, video content as well as many TV programmes now being streamed via the net.

This comes as Telstra came out just this week warning parents of the dangers for children posed by online.

Reading of print media has also gone down the drain with newspapers and magazines taking up less than an hour a week of young Australians time, according to the research by Roy Morgan Research of 2,914 young Aussies.

“Whilst on free to air, multi channelling has dramatically increased their total hours of children’s’ programming. Clearly this increased choice has enabled television to maintain its domination of children’s media usage” Michael Duncan, Roy Morgan Research’s industry director.

“Their current media usage shows a clear preference for media that has screen based technology.”
