Twitter Direct Messages are no longer limited to 140 characters, with Twitter announcing it has now removed the limit, allowing users to expand on their private conversations.The new limit for Twitter’s Direct Message feature, which allows users to speak privately one-on-one or in groups, is 10,000 characters, providing ample space for private conversations.
“You can now chat on (and on) in a single Direct Message, and likely still have some characters left over,” Sachin Agarwal, Twitter product manager, announced via the Twitter blog.
“While Twitter is largely a public experience, Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements and events that unfold on Twitter. Each of the hundreds of millions of Tweets sent across Twitter every day is an opportunity for you to spark a conversation about what’s happening in your world.”
Agarwal described the change as “another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun”.
As for the public side of Twitter, tweets will continue to retain their current character length of 140 characters.
Agarwal advised that Twitter will begin rolling out the change across its Android and iOS apps, on twitter.com, TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac, and will continue to roll it out worldwide over the next few weeks.
