Twitter Retires Discover Tab, Updates Mobile Trends

Twitter is retiring its Discover tab as it reworks its mobile trends experience for iOS and Android, designed to make trends more informative and easier to find.As part of the update, Twitter will be moving trends to the search page, with changes also to be made to the presentation of trends.

Acknowledging that trends “aren’t always self-explanatory”, tending to be abbreviations without context, Twitter will now be inserting a description below each trend.

By way of example, Twitter states “#NYFW” will now be accompanied by a description making it clear that this trend is about New York Fashion Week.

Among the changes, Twitter has stated the revamped trends experience “may also include how many Tweets have been sent and whether a topic is trending up or down”.

The trends update follows Twitter’s efforts over the last several months to make content easier to access, including the introduction of recaps, providing a recap of top Tweets while users have not been using Twitter.

Trends with descriptions is rolling out now in the US in English for users who have tailored trends on iOS and Android, with Twitter stating it is currently experimenting with similar features on the web and looking forward to expanding the experience to more countries in the future.
