UPDATE: Sony TV’s ‘Blinking’ Mystery

Whirpool is spewing out complaints about Sony Bravia TVs but Sony now say its under control.

The issue appears to be associated with a bug in the electronic program guides, causing the Sony TV’s front LED light to blink on and off and the TV to randomly switch off. Affected models include KDL-55HX850, KDL-55HX850 and  65″ HX955.

‘Wally’ wrote on the Whirlpool forum on Monday: “I just had problems with my Sony KDL-46X850 set (which) would turn on and then switch itself off after a few minutes. Then the red standby light was flashing 8 times before trying to turn back on.
“Took ages to get thru to Sony support as a lot of owners are having similar problems.”

“I had same problem tonight! sony 40Hx750 .I was watching “The Block “, every time I tried to get in Program Guide it crashed and keep restart. And it only happen in channel 9,” y3000Francis wrote.

Hilluz  added: “Very strange! I also had the issue around 8:30pm tonight. 55″ HX850 – TV just randomly turned off. After switching it back on, the TV would stay on for around 10 seconds then turn back off. At the time, I was watching a TV show through my WDTV Live box over HDMI. My TV at the time was not connected to the Internet in any way.”
Another forum user wrote the following advice.
“Try turning the power Off and then On by pressing the power button on the TV.2. Remove AC power from the TV for one minute by unplugging the TV from the outlet or power strip.”
UPDATE: The Bravia TV maker sent the following update at 12.30pm today.

“Sony has identified that corrupt broadcaster EPG data has been affecting some BRAVIA TVs (from KDL-EX550, KDL-EX650, KDL-HX750 and KDL-HX850 series) in NSW, VIC and QLD.”

“EPG data is sent directly to the TV set periodically by an automated system within broadcasters.

Nine Network Australia engineers are believed to have identified the source of the corrupt EPG data, stabilised the issue and are working through solutions to provide a permanent fix.

“If any customers are still experiencing issues, we advise them to unplug their TV from the powerpoint, leave to stand for one minute and then plug it back in,” Sony adviced.

Further updates will be posted on sony.com.au/support.
