Very Smart: LG’s Cool 661L Fridge

It’s not everyday you’re asked to the opening of a fridge.

So when we were invited to LG SXS Door-in-door launch we thought more of the same.

But we were wrong.

To see LG’s new Side by Side Door-in-Door 661Litre refrigerator was worth the journey to Chiswick, where LG’s ambassador Matt Moran’s restaurant is located at the leafy Woollahra in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

The silver colour of the SXS also makes it a standout to the white fridges we are used to seeing in kitchens, and the door-in-door is far more solid to open.

The SXS size “is very smart…it makes sense” says Moran at yesterday’s launch, adding “its important to keep fridge temperature under control.” 

And as one of Australia’s top chefs he knows all about food storage.

It has two compartments for separate food storage; outer and inner doors; ice box is also built into the door; air filtration system, and LED Lighting.

However, at $3,499 its not cheap.

The GR-D257SL 661Ltr release is a sister model to LG’s flagship French Door-in-Door refrigerator launched in August 2012 which has sold well here, and LG says it’s now a leader in the French Door category in Oz.

There is “demand and growing appetite” for dual access door fridges, LG Australia says.

“With the freezer on the left and the new Door-in-Door panel on the right, the Side by Side Door-in-Door brings exceptional innovation and style to any kitchen,” said Lambro Skropidis, LG Australia Marketing Manager.

Australian households waste $500 -$1,000 a year as a result of cluttered, disorganised fridges, on average, research suggests.

To conquer this, the Side by Side Door-in-Door gives “enhanced space to store and organise food” with a door panel that provides quick access to everyday foods like butter, milk and juice without affecting the overall fridge temp, while the inner compartment is for other less used items like meat and sauces.

LG says the massive fridge will save on food wastage due to its ‘moisture balance crisper’ which reduces dry air from creating condensation to keep veggies fresh – the No. 1 item thrown out by consumers.

And Moran says he “hates waste” (he even gave media at yesterday’s event a cooking lesson and a look around his organic garden, which was superb, as was the food he served to hungry journos).

Opening the Door-in-Door won’t affect the overall refrigerator temperature, and saves cold air from escaping – up to 52% more  compared to regular fridges, says LG. This is handy since a fridge door can be opened as much as 30-49 times a day.

And if you’ve a big household, the Door-in-Door has 2.5 times more internal space than a regular home bar fridge.

Other cool features include an In-Door mounted Ice Maker with touch display, which means additional open shelf space within the freezer, and an adjustable basket.

The new Side by Side Door-in Door comes with LG’s 10 year linear compressor parts warranty, and the GR-D257SL 661Ltr will be available from the beginning of March with RRP of $3,499.
