Telco dismissed suggestions its relationship with Chinese operator would threaten NBN security.

The issue emerged at a joint hearing into the $36 billion National Broadband Network held yesterday in Sydney, where Vodafone denied it partners with Huawei on its core network.
“We use Huawei for a fair way out of our network. We don’t use Huawei for the core of our network,” Matthew Lobb, VHA Industry Strategy and Public Policy boss, told a joint committee on NBN in Sydney yesterday, reports The Register.
“It’s delivering good results for us,” he added.
But VHA appears to have zero issues with the Chinese telco, which is currently banned from working on the NBN project by the Federal government, over cyber attack fears and suspicions of alleged links Huawei has with Chinese authorities.
The ban, following advice from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, is despite the Chinse telecom giant, one of the largest in the world, working closely with Optus on its networks including its 4G service, to be unveiled later this month.
“The important thing to understand is security of network is a vital part of any telco’s business.
“It’s the key thing that people must trust, so both consumers and governments must trust our networks.” Lobb replied to questions from independent MP Rob Oakeshott.
At yesterdays hearing Vodafone Hutchinson Austalia (VHA) also revealed it would be entering the fixed line market offering Internet and phone based services, via the NBN.
