Western Digital Roll Out Super-Thin 1TB Drive That Will Change Notebook Design

Western Digital has revealed a 1TB 7mm drive called the WD Blue, which analysts claim will allow notebook manufacturers to design notebooks that are slim, but still pack a large drive.

The new product comes as Sandisk gets set
to launch a new 128GB SD card that doubles the size of an Ultrabook drive.

Described as the world’s thinnest hard
drive, the device has already been picked up by PC manufacturers who are keen
to lure users back to using a notebook over a tablet.

PC sales in Australia have dropped
significantly this year, with 1.21 million units sold in the first quarter of
2013, according to new figures released by research Company IDC.

In Australia, there were 1.07 units sold
during the quarter, representing a 21 per cent year-on-year decline.

Tiffany Huang, BG president, PC global
operations for Acer, who saw a 38% decline in Australian sales last year, said: “With the release of WD’s 1 TB capacity in a 7mm hard drive height, Acer
customers now have the best of both options and no longer have to choose
between the lightness of thin, sleekly-designed systems or those with high
capacity storage.”

Acer reported a $5m loss for the year ending December 2012.

The new hard drive offers the following:

Shock Tolerance: WD’s ShockGuard technology
protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shock.

Cool and Quiet: WD’s proprietary
WhisperDrive technology helps the drive to run quietly)

Dual Stage Actuators: This comes from the
company’s high-performance commercial industry products and the company says
this technology utilizes two actuators to provide positional accuracy over data
tracks.)
