Intel could cop a nasty blow if Apple decides to stop using its chipsets in their Mac notebook range.
Bloomberg reports Apple is considering switching from Intel processors to its own proprietary chips, such as the A6x processor.

Apple engineers have “grown confident” in the performance capabilities of their processors and, according to unsubstantiated sources “familiar with the company’s research”, believe they’re now powerful enough to handle the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
The shift in processers indicates how powerful mobile processors have become and the eventual cohabitation of smartphone, tablet and computer operating systems.
Despite expressing the current Apple range of processors are capable of handling OS X on Apple’s MacBook notebooks, the move won’t take place in the near future, asserting Apple is committed to its partnership with Intel. The move is expected to take place “in the next few years.”
Gartner analyst Sergis Mushell believes if Apple take the plunge, they will inspire other manufacturers to use their own proprietary chipsets.
“Apple is a trendsetter, and once they did their own chip many others may pursue a similar path,” he said to Pocket-lint.
Mushell believes the shift to mobile processors could result in a compromise in performance. “If mobility is more important than functionality, then we will have a completely different environment than we are dealing with today.”
In 2005 and 2006, Apple abandoned IBM’s PowerPC architecture for Intel’s more powerful processors. The move helped them become much more competitive in the PC space by allowing consumers to run Windows from a separate partition.
