Activision-owned Blizzard Entertainment sold more than 3.3 million copies of the third World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, in its first day on shelves, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time.Activision now holds the record for fastest selling PC game for WoW: Cataclysm and fastest selling video game for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops which recently made $360 million in its first day of release.
The subscription Mass Multiplayer Online game has garnered 12 million worldwide subscribers who pay a monthly fee to play, resulting in steady income for Activision Blizzard.
Back in November 2008, Blizzard overlapped its previous sales record with the second expansion of Wow, Wrath of the Lich King, which sold 2.8 million units in a day.
Activision started up in 1979 as the world’s first independent game developer and distributor, shipping cartridges for the original Atari 2600. Since then, the vastly profitable gaming institution has had mergers and partnerships with Vivendi and Valve: companies that have pushed the successive growth of Activision.
“Assuming the positive trends extend beyond the first 24 hours post-release, we expect stable to slightly higher subscriber levels for WoW in North America and Europe,” said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian in a research note reported by Reuters.
