Woz: Apple Should Befriend Android Enemy With iTunes

Apple’s co-founder believes iTunes should be made available on its rival’s smartphone platform, Android.

An animated Steve Wozniak
Addressing Slashdot fans in a Q&A session, Wozniak claimed Apple really gained momentum with the iPod, particularly when the company made iTunes available to Windows PCs.

With the formula proven, Woz questions why Apple wouldn’t mimic the same play by making iTunes available to Android smartphones, which currently accounts for more than half of the smartphone market.

“Apple’s real rise from the small market-share Macintosh company to the iProducts of today began with iTunes and the iPod,” began Woz.

“This turned out to be a second huge business which roughly doubled Apple’s ‘size,'” he continued.

“If you remember, we ported iTunes to Windows. We now addressed 100 per cent of the world’s market with this integrated system (iPod/iTunes) and it began the era of Apple that we are now in.

“So why don’t we port iTunes to Android? I love Apple products and iTunes and wish it were on my Android products too.”

Like Woz, faithful Android users would relish sharing their iTunes music library easily with their existing smartphones. But if Apple made iTunes available to Android users, they’d be taking one of the iPhone’s competitive advantages away and that could see fewer people defecting to the iPhone.

Sorry Woz, but we doubt Apple cares about the iTunes user experience as much as it does selling iPhones, iPads and iPods.
