Xbox 720 Kinecting More People

As Sony’s mysterious PlayStation launch event nears, detail of Microsoft’s upcoming console leak.

There’s a new Nintendo, Sony is hosting a mysterious PlayStation event on February 20 and Microsoft is quiet on a new console. Thankfully gaming site Kotaku has received “white papers” revealing some of the features we might see in the new Xbox.

For starters Microsoft’s famous Kinect 2.0 motion controller will feature a prominent role as it “must be plugged in and calibrated for the console to even function.”

If you’re thinking Microsoft is looking to add onto Xbox sales, we should let you know word is their Kinect 2.0 motion controller will be bundled as part of the kit.

It does indicate gamers will rely on voice and gesture control for even the basics, like navigating the standard menu or upping the volume of a video on demand service.

The next Xbox is believed to have some serious processing grunt, enough to run multiple games and applications simultaneously.

To do so it’s believed to have an 8 core x64 CPU clocked at 1.6GHz, 64-bit D3D11.x 800MHz GPU and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. For connectivity there is a USB 3.0 port, HDMI out and, most interestingly, an optical drive that can read 50GB discs.

The current Xbox famously reads dual layer DVD discs, which has since been made redundant by Sony’s Blu-ray. Conforming will likely see the new Xbox disinherit legacy games, but sticking with the current technology limits gaming developers. It looks like Microsoft is left with a tough conundrum.
