Xmas Tab War: Moto Slashes Xoom 40% $399

Motorola Xoom’s in with cut price tab deal for Christmas buyers as Telstra releases its “affordable” iPad 2 bundles starting at $49 per month. Motorola have just slashed 39% off 10.1 inch Android XOOM Wi-Fi to $399 sold at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Costco “making it even more affordable, as well as desirable,” it announced today. The discount is available from today, however, it is unclear if poor sales is behind Xoom sudden price cut or whether it is looking to clear stock as it makes way for new models, announced last week.

It is a massive price cut from original $840 asking price for much hyped Xoom.

iPad currently accounts for around 73% of all tablets bought in Australia, leaving Android devices which includes Acer Iconia (said to be selling well), Asus Eee Pad’s and Toshiba Tab to battle it out for the remains.

XOOM Wi-Fi features a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, front-facing and rear-facing cameras, true multi-tasking functionality, and the latest Google Mobile services on a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display – and also comes with inbuilt e-reader.

The Moto tablet will also be upgradeable to Android 3.2 software via free download, which includes pro applications  Quickoffice pro HD,  edit QuickOffice documents including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, it announced, hoping possibly to lure some business users in as well as Xmas shoppers.

“The Motorola XOOM is the perfect Christmas gift for any tech-savvy loved-one who wants to stand out from the crowd,” the Google owned giant says.

Telstra also today announced it will offer iPad 2 with Wi-Fi + 3G on a range of “affordable” pre-pay and post -paid price plans, from November 15.

Post-paid two year deals start at $49 for 1GB data and go up to $99 for 15GB allowance. The 16GB iPad 2 can be bought outright for $720.

“Telstra is delighted to make iPad 2 available to purchase from select Telstra Stores around Australia,” said Anthea Roberts, Director, Telstra Mobile Broadband.

“Our customers will be able to buy iPad 2 on a plan that includes no upfront fee, a generous monthly data allowance and which allows them to pay the device off over 24 months.

“Customers will also be able to purchase iPad 2 outright and team it with one of our popular iPad Pre-Paid options that allows them to top up data as they need.”
