Motorola Ditches Custom Skin In Android 4.0 Upgrade

Motorola has posted videos that showcase Android 4.0 features on its Motorola Razr smartphone, indicating the update is just around the corner.Other manufacturers are busy adding their individual skin to Android 4.0, but based on the videos there’s only a few minor differences: the task manager, address book and menu all appear to be standard Android 4.0. In fact, the skin is largely standard with the addition of a few apps and subtle tweaks.

And that’s a good thing. By default, Android 4.0 is a complete piece of software. Manufacturers simply bother with a custom skin in an effort to differentiate themselves from one another. The previous software used by Motorola featured a heavy skin, so what could have changed Motorola’s mind?

Perhaps Google, Motorola Mobility’s new owner, exerted some influence in the matter. After all, by keeping Moto’s custom software to a minimum, it should be easier for the company to release future updates quicker.

GSMArena note the addition of a very cool Webtop mode. By connecting your Razr to a TV (or other display), the phone’s UI shows up on screen and can be controlled via the smartphone which acts as a trackpad to control an on screen cursor.

Other changes include timescape video recording, a custom unlock screen and a new battry indicator.

The videos were posted on Motorola’s Japan site which, according to Motorola’s official update schedule, will have its cooked software released in the same quarter as Australia. Check out the videos.
