Tablet and notebook manufacturers including Apple, Acer, Viewsonic, Toshiba and Motorola have been told to stop selling devices that include a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable.
According to the HDMI Organisation, Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers who are making the cables for tablet, media centre devices and notebooks are currently selling unlicensed and should immediately stop selling the product.
Acer and Apple have not responded to our requests for a comment.
Last week SmartHouse revealed that millions of the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables was set to be recalled by HDMI Org. Cables or dongles, with a DisplayPort socket on one side and an HDMI female connector on the other end are deemed to comply.
In Australia both Motorola and Acer have launched new Android tablets with Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables that do not comply. These cables have a HDMI male connector at one end and DP male connector at the other.
Manufacturers are promoting them as a means to deliver 1080p content from a tablet to a TV.
The HDMI Organisation that is based in the USA said that a licence fee has to be paid by the vendors who are distributing the cable.
They said that anything that has an HDMI connector has to be licenced by the organisation for authenticity and specification compliance. They told SmartHouse that “all HDMI cables” have to meet Compliance Testing Specification Certification”
None of the cables being distributed by Apple with their MAC computers complies says the HDMI organisation.
An HDMI Org executive is reported to have said “We do recognise that there may be a market need for a cable solution rather than a dongle solution. However, at this time, there is no way to produce these cable products in a licensed manner.”
