Comeback Kid: Optus Hire Ex ‘3’ Boss

New man in charge of Optus operations is Kevin Russell, announced as new Chief Operating Officer with “immediate effect.”

The former boss of UK mobile operator Hutchison Three, is an “experienced” Chief Executive and COO with both international and Australian experience, and spent sixteen years working for the Hutchison Whampoa Group in senior roles.

He spent the last five years as COO and CEO of Hutchison Three UK, and was responsible for leading its turnaround.

Russell is also a former head of Hutchison Telecoms Australia where he was in charge of the roll-out of the country’s first 3G network.

In his Sydney based role, he will be responsible for the day to day operations of all main segments of Optus; from consumer, SMB market, Wholesale and Satellite division and its wholly owned subsidiary Virgin Mobile,  the telco said in a statement today.

He will report to Optus’ Chief, Paul O’ Sullivan.

“I’m returning to Australia at a very exciting time in the telecoms industry with the roll-out of 4G and the National Broadband Network both gathering pace,” Mr Russell said.

“I’m looking forward to working with Paul and the Optus team to take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead,”

 

“Kevin’s experience and this appointment will strengthen our ability to take full advantage of the opportunities emerging in our market.

“His track record in the industry speaks for itself and I am delighted to welcome him to the Optus team,” O’Sullivan said today.
