Customers who have upgraded their Samsung Galaxy SII smartphone to the new Ice Cream Sandwich now want to downgrade back to Gingerbread following drastically reduced battery life.
The Ice Cream Sandwich update is meant to usher in a slew of new performance features, compatibility with enhanced applications and prove more efficient than its predecessors. However, Telstra customers who have upgraded their SII from Android 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 are experiencing incredibly poor battery life.
“The battery is now flat after just 6 – 8 hours just sitting on the bedside table. During the day I have to rechagre to keep it going! This is very disappointing and I wish I could downgrade to 2.3.6,” blogged marcimark. Other bloggers chimed in, saying:
“My applications haven’t changed, only battery life has!”
“Its quite annoying because i charge it up to full at night, by the time i wake up its at 10% battery life… and i was sleeping…”
These customers are now pleading Telstra to facilitate a downgrade to the previous version of software which proved more reliable. Unfortunately it also appears Optus customers are experiencing similar side effects. Optus released a version cooked by Samsung in April and dubbed it ‘test software.’ It did not receive a warm reception.
“I did the update to what you guys are calling the test software. 4.03. It is an absolute disgrace!… The battery gets used in 5 hours instead of a whole day or more,” blogged dutchy on an Optus support forum.
Another blogger, dimmmy0000, wrote: “I upgraded my S2 to ICS recently. Really like it, but it is killing my battery life. Every since upgrade, lucky to get 5 hours on standby. It is not my battery as I have a back (Samsung original) up and it does note work with that one either.”
Following complaints, Optus removed the software from its site, with the following post:
Guys – the update that you’ve seen available was a test firmware which was inadvertently released by Samsung. Whilst there won’t be any problems with this update being run on your handsets the update was not ready to be released and has since been removed by Samsung.
Ice Cream Sandwich was first greeted into the market in December of 2011 on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Android users have longed for an ICS update, but SII customers seem to have been dished an OS prematurely, with the bugs and kinks souring the experience.
Vodafone and 3 are expected to release Ice Cream Sandwich for their Galaxy SII smartphones any day now. Hopefully the additional delay will see their customers granted some relief.
