Peter Jackson’s mammoth monkey is back, and this time he’s bigger than ever before! Kong was already 187 minutes long, though, so why would you want to watch an even longer version?
Well, the good news is that, out of the 13 minutes of new material, absolutely nothing has been added in the tedious run-up to the arrival at Skull Island. Instead there’s a trio of new encounters with prehistoric creatures on the island, plus a handful of extended scnes that help flesh out some of the supporting cast and the relationship between Ann and Kong.
Of the new additions, the most pleasing are a brief encounter with an enraged Styracosaurus and a spectacular and lengthy new sequence showing a load of crewmen being eaten by some kind fo sea monster while crossing a swamp!
Of course, if you didn’t like the theatrical cut, there’s little about this new extended edition of King Kong that is likely to change your opinion. However, if you already had a bit of a monkey-crush going on, (like us) you’ll gobble up every new piece of spectacle this longer cut serves up.
As with the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Kong is now split across two discs (the break occurring shortly after the natives hand Ann over to Kong). The result is a truly fabulous anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer, packed with fine detail and solid colour reproduction. The only real disappointment about this release is the lack of a DTS mix, but the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio still packs plenty of punch thanks.
This three-disc set contains none of the bonus material that appeared in the earlier DVD release of the film or the Production Diary set, instead offering up a superb collection of all-new bonus features. Accompanying the film is a commentary track from Jackson and co-writer/producer Philippa Boyens, while Disc One also plays host to 16 deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and three short featurettes. Disc Two offers three trailers, four pre-viz animatics, a WETA Collectibles featurette and the 1996 and 2005 scripts. Disc Three is dedicated solely to extras, the centerpiece being Recreating the Eighth Wonder: The Making of King Kong – a spectacular nine-part, 187-min documentary detailing every aspect of this epic undertaking. Also included are an introduction by Jackson and five conceptual design video galleries.
