Game Review: Resistance Fall Of Man

We’d been waiting for the PlayStation 3 for so long that its arrival on March 23 could have easily been a let-down if the games had failed to live up to the hype.

Thankfully, that didn’t occur, and Resistance: Fall Of Man is all the proof we need of that. This first-person shooter pushes all the next-gen buttons, including the super-impressive graphics.

The open vistas are jaw-droppingly good in terms of scope and detail – we were particularly impressed by the detailed backgrounds. The foreground acquit themselves well, too. Animation is smooth and life-like.

But no matter how good a game looks, it’s nothing if the story isn’t enjoyable. Luckily then that Resistance’s storyline is one of the most imaginative we’ve come across in a while. In this hypothetical world, World War II didn’t occur: instead, a race of monsters called the Chimera took over parts of the world during those years.

As the game starts, England has just been taken over by the beasts and the US decides to intervene. You play as Sergeant Nathan Hale, who takes it upon himself to save the human race. It’s a dash of Call Of Duty mixed with Halo with a dose of F.E.A.R. thrown in for good measure, however it manages to separate itself from all of those much-loved titles.

Resistance is a great introduction to the new console and shows off its visual and aural capabilities – and also hints at the great things the PS3 will be capable of in the future.
