Expensive iPhones & 3G iPads Preferred Over Cheap Models

Consumers are buying high priced iPhones over lower priced models and are also purchasing 3G enabled iPads over Wi Fi models, according to a new research study from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. The researchers also claim that Apple stores are increasing their share of iPhone and iPad sales, and the iPad2 continued to sell well after the March launch of the “new iPad”.

In asking purchasers about their purchase venue, CIRP found that Apple stores accounted for 25 percent of iPhone unit sales and 44 percent of iPad unit sales, up from 15 percent and 26 percent, respectively, in the January-February period.

CIRP said the newer iPhone 4S outsold the older iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS despite higher prices. The iPhone 4S accounted for 73 percent of iPhone purchases, up from 69 percent in the previous survey. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS accounted for 22 percent and 5 percent of sales, respectively.

When it came to PCs and Macs, laptops dominate total Mac computer sales.

Apple stores, however, lost Mac computer share, with Apple stores’ share falling to 42 percent from 46 percent between the two survey periods.

MacBook’s accounted for 78 percent of total Mac computer sales, with the high-end MacBook Pro accounting for half of laptop sales and 40 percent of total Mac computer sales.

For the survey, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) contacted 7,348 US consumers who purchased an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer in a two-month period ending in April.
