HTC executives in Australia have confirmed that their new 4G Velocity smartphone which Telstra claims is selling “like hotcakes” will get Android 4.0 “soon”.Marketing and Sales Director Jeremy Mathews also said that Sensation models (such as the Sensation XE) will also be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich but he was not confident that a March the 1st deadline which is tipped for overseas models will be met in Australia due to approval processes that have to be met by carriers.
The upgrade to Android 4.0 will give HTC Velocity and Sensation owner’s access to the new super-fast Chrome browser which only works on an ICS OS.
Recently HTC Australia launched the super-fast Velocity with the old Android 2.3 OS despite Samsung already having the Google Nexus smartphone in the market running Android 4.0.
Privately industry executives are blaming Telstra, claiming the 4 month approval process that Telstra demands for smartphones going onto their network was to blame.
The overseas updates to Android 4.0 are expected on March 1st.
The update schedule puts the Sensation range at the forefront of HTC models being sold in Australia, but that may change with the expected launch of a host of new Android 4.0, 4G LTE devices at MWC later this month.
Mathews said “We are hopingt to get the Velocity upgraded to Android 4.0 soon, also in the pipeline is the Sensation”.
