Intel is working on an augmented reality wearable headset, The Wall Street Journal has reported people briefed on Intel’s plans as stating.Intel plans to utilise its 3D RealSense camera technology in its development, the WSJ reported its sources as stating.
Designed to create more ways of interacting with devices, Intel’s RealSense cameras are currently incorporated into a range of products, from laptops and tablets to all-in-ones, with Intel having showcased a number of new developments in the tech at this year’s CES.
The WSJ reported that, according to its sources, instead of marketing it to end users, Intel will likely offer the headset design to other manufacturers, with the sources not aware of any partners lined up.
The augmented reality and virtual reality market is poised for growth in the coming years, with a number of products in development and set for release.
Earlier this year, Digi-Capital forecast that augmented/virtual reality revenue will reach US$120 billion by 2020, of which augmented reality is expected to account for US$90 billion.
Among recent developments in the augmented reality market, Microsoft this week opened its HoloLens Development Edition for pre-order, stating that it will begin shipping March 30.
