It Worked: Apple-Samsung Court Case Slowed Down Android Sales

New statistics released today by the International Data Corporation (IDC) indicates Apple’s litigation against Android manufacturers has worked by slowing down their sales, while its own iPad continues to thrive.

The IDC report, Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker (2011 Q3), documents tablet sales in Australia and New Zealand and shows sales rose just by 1.6% QoQ.

Android tablets dropped in sales by 37% when compared to the previous quarter.

“The court case over Samsung’s Galaxy 10.1 slowed down Android’s momentum in Australia,” said Yee-Kuan Lau, Market Analyst for IDC ANZ.

“The initial hype around a variety of Android media tablet launches in Q2 subdued in Q3 whilst Apple iPad 2 continued its upward momentum in Australia,” Lau said.

Although Australia’s appetite for Android tablets was drying up, New Zealand’s grew by more than 60% QoQ.

“Android momentum is strong in New Zealand and the growth is due amongst other things to the collective efforts of major players such as Motorola, Acer, Asus and Samsung, which had the advantage to sell Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country,” said Lau.

Android Media tablets shares dropped by 8 points in the third quarter accounting for 16.5% of the market’s size. In the same quarter, Apple’s iPad 2 rose by 77.7%, with RIM’s PlayBook and HP’s TouchPad accounting for the rest of the shipments.

“Apple continues to grow in ANZ with additional retail stores followed by a channel expansion: selling through Australian telco operators for the first time and appointing Ingram Micro as a second distributor in New Zealand,” Lau said.

“Consumers now have more device choices such as Ultrabooks, although the impact of this form factor on media tablets remains minimal at this stage. IDC expects the media tablet momentum will pick up a notch when Android 4.0 tablets are launched and also in the long-run when LTE-capable devices hit the market, which will result in more media tablet sales through telco operators.”

Android tablet shipments are predicted to idle below the 100,000 mark with an estimated Q4 share of 20%. By comparison, approximately 1.5 million Apple iPads will be shipped into Australia and New Zealand by the year’s end.

Despite the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 having its ban lifted pre-Christmas, the IDC doesn’t believe its availability will largely influence overall Q4 sales.
