Judge Orders Apple-HTC Peace Talks

HTC and Apple have been suing each other tit-for-tat over various patent violations. These legal quagmires have been going on for almost a year now and thus far have shown no signs of slowing down.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel.

A judge presiding over Delaware District Court has ordered the “unspecified decision makers of Apple and HTC” to hold settlement talks on the 28th of August before Judge Sherry R. Fallon.

If a sense of deja vu washes over you, it’s probably because Apple was ordered to hold the same talks with Samsung just a couple of weeks ago. In that instance, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Gee-Sung Choi will be meeting up, hopefully to diffuse their intense litigation which has bounced across 12 courts in 9 countries over 4 continents.

In July of 2011, the International Trade Commission (ITC) sided with Apple, claiming HTC infringed two of their patents. A month later HTC hit back with its own infringement complaint against the iPhone maker. Litigation between the two boiled to a point where HTC was forced to delay the launch of its One X and EVO 4G smartphones in the US.

Here’s to hoping the decision makers of these big companies can play nice and come to an agreement so their loyal customers can buy the products they’ve been keenly waiting for.
