LG Electronics, which released three smartphones in this year, plans to launch three times more smartphones in the next year, according to LG at a press conference in Korea. It also revealed an ambitious goal to make the smartphones “million sellers”.On the line up is a smartphone featuring Windows Mobile. smartphones based on Symbian and Linux could also be added to the list if market response is good, said LG.
Concerns have risen that LG might lose its market influence without smartphones, which are expecting phenomenal growth in the next couple of years.
LG said that it would make a profit model that can work in low-end market. Most of the low end phones it had released in emerging markets were for market tests, said the company. It said that it was developing a couple of platforms with an aim to release them in the second quarter in the next year. It set a goal to run a single digit margin in the low-end market in 2009, raise it to a high single digit later in 2010, and make the margin the same as total handset sales margin in 2012.
