Australians – like Americans and Britons – are increasingly using tablets rather than PCs to handle many daily personal activities, according to the results of a new three-nation Gartner survey.
The survey found that the main activities moving from PCs to tablets are checking e-mail (81 percent of respondents), reading the news (69pc), checking the weather forecast (63pc), social networking (62pc) and gaming (60pc).
The survey was run at the end of 2011 with respondents recording in an online seven-day diary what they did with their three most used devices – like smartphones, tablets or laptops – on a daily basis.
Answers revealed that more than 50 percent of tablet owners prefer to read news, magazines and books on screen, rather than on paper. And one in three use their tablets to read a book, compared with 13 percent for mobile PCs, and 7 percent for mobile phones.”
All this means that tablets are now playing a more dominant role in the home than mobile phones or PCs, with the highest usage taking place in the living room (87 percent), the bedroom (65pc) and the kitchen (47pc).
