The Navman EZY40 is an affordable in-dash GPS that keeps navigation simple. It is aimed at someone who has never used a sat-nav before, with the device sporting large icons and a fairly simple layout.

The EZY 40 sports a 4.3-inch screen and measures 127 x 82 x 15mm. The device only has a power switch on top and a microSD slot beside the mini-USB port at the bottom.
In order to get started, all a user needs to do is to slide the power switch to ON. The device will show the Safety Agreement, Tutorial (which you can skip), and then display five icons – Find, Map, My Places, Settings, and Near Me. Pressing the Find button allows you to look for an address, keyword, city/area, postcode, points of interest, and even browse the map for places to visit.
The unit comes with a Quick Spell Keyboard that disables irrelevant letters from the keyboard as a user types. As a user types ‘Cremorne’, the significant letters are removed, with the important letters showing up in grey. It also comes with a Smart Find Keyword Search function that narrows down your search. For example, typing ‘Cre’ automatically suggests ‘Cremorne Point’, ‘Crem’ suggests ‘Cremorne Junction’, and ‘Cremo’ brings up ‘Cremorne’.

If you know the name of a place but don’t know which suburb it is on, you can use the Keyword function to look for it. Typing ‘Koshigaya’ gives you a ‘Koshigaya Park, Campbelltown’, while ‘Opera’ gives you a couple of suggestions including ‘Opera Bar’, ‘Opera Quays’, and of course, ‘Sydney Opera House’.
Calculating a route is quick – the unit displays a driving map with details such as the direction and distance of a turn, current route, current position, address bar, and distance information. Navman has included text-to-speech function and landmark guidance on the EZY40, which gives a user a better idea on where to go.
For example, instead of saying ‘In 200 metres, turn right’, it is able to say ‘In 500 metres, at the traffic lights, turn left at Wattle Street’. The unit also comes with advance lane guidance that shows you which lane/lanes you should stay on and 3D Junction Views that shows you which exit you should go to.
The EZY40 also comes with a Near Me service that lets you find the nearest restaurant, petrol station, parking place, motels, ATMs, or the nearest hospital. All a user needs to do is to press the Near Me button, find the desired POI, and click on Go. Other features include safety alerts, school zone alerts (dependent on time and day), and speed limit alerts.
Overall, the Navman EZY40 is a straightforward device that can help first time users get to places. Sure it may not have Bluetooth, FM Transmitter, multimedia playback, or traffic receiver (separate purchase), but who needs it when you just want to go and hit the road? The EZY40 is available now for $279.
