Nikkor Lens Adds Functionality To Entry-Level DSLRs

Nikon has formally announced a new Nikkor lens for its DSLR cameras that runs on a new optical formula.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens will allow autofocus on all the latest entry-level Nikon DSLRs, including the recently revealed D5100.

The lens allows 3D rendering, only possible on cameras sporting a fixed focal-length lens, thanks to its Silent Wave autofocus motor. This motor also allows the lens to be used on entry-level Nikon cameras that don’t have their own autofocus motor.

The 50mm f/1.8G lens features an aperture range of f/1.8-16, seven lens elements in six groups, one being an aspherical element, rounded (seven-blade) aperture diaphragm, a close focus distance of 1.48ft/45cm and a 58mm filter size.

The aspherical lens element is a first for a 50mm f1.8 lens and is used here to maximise rendering performance for high quality images with or without a light source.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will retail at $299 from Nikon stockists from June 2.
