OFFICIAL: iPhone 4S Battery Fix A Dud

2010 was Antennaegate. 2011 is Batterygate. It’s official: iOS 5.0.1 software update is somewhat of a flop, Apple has admitted – just days after releasing the update, hailed as a ‘cure for’ all iPhone 4S woes.

Apple admitted that its iOS 5.0.1, tipped to fix the iPhone 4S poor battery problems and banish the bug uncovered by US programmer Charlie Miller, has failed to fully resolve the woes, admitting “remaining issues” needing to be tackled.

“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices,” Apple told AllThingsD on Friday.

However, not quite all, it admitted: “We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

It appears ‘Batterygate’ on iPhone 4S is fast replacing last year’s iPhone 4 ‘Antennaegate’ scandal that plagued Apple hardware.

This latest software update came after Apple was forced to release a second version of a beta update to iOS 5 in a matter of days after Apple users complained of poor battery life on new 4S, although the giant said the issue just affected a small number.

The iOS 5.0.1 update also “improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation,” it confirmed in release notes issued Thursday, although there has been no reports Siri has gone haywire since the update.

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple said earlier this month.

“We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”
