Over 720,000 Android Wear Devices Shipped In 2014: All Eyes Now On Apple

Motorola was a clear leader among Android Wear vendors in 2014, according to research firm Canalys, with all eyes now on Apple and the upcoming release of the Apple Watch.Canalys figures reveal Android Wear got off to something of a slow start, with over 720,000 Android Wear devices shipped in 2014 out of a total of 4.6 million smart wearable bands.

Despite the Moto 360 remaining supply constrained throughout the fourth quarter, Motorola led the way, with Canalys noting LG’s G Watch R performed significantly better than its original G Watch, while Asus and Sony also entered the Android Wear market with their own devices.

Pebble shipped 1 million units from its 2013 launch through to the end of 2014, with Canalys stating continual software updates, more apps in its app store and price cuts helped maintain strong second-half sales.

Samsung, which has launched various devices over the past year, remains the smart band market leader.

“Samsung has launched six devices in just 14 months on different platforms and still leads the smart band market, but it has struggled to keep consumers engaged and must work hard to attract developers while it focuses on Tizen for its wearables,” commented Canalys VP and principal analyst Chris Jones.

Xiaomi shipped over a million units of its Mi Band, including one day of sales of over 103,000 units, with Fitbit remaining the global leader in the basic wearable band market.

Canalys expects the Apple Watch will “dramatically grow” both the smart band and wearables markets.

“Apple made the right decisions with its WatchKit software development kit to maximise battery life for the platform, and the Apple Watch will offer leading energy efficiency,” commented Canalys analyst Daniel Matte.

“Android Wear will need to improve significantly in the future, and we believe it will do so.”
