Samsung And HTC Smartphone Flagships Set To Impress With Camera Tech

The next generation of smartphones will be sporting increasingly sophisticated camera tech, with Samsung and HTC both expected to take significant steps forward with their respective upcoming flagship releases. With both companies set to hold media conferences on March 1 in Barcelona ahead of the Mobile World Congress, the rumours have been flying thick and fast as to what to expect in the camera department, and doubtless both HTC and Samsung will be looking to get on the front foot and promote their next generation smartphone camera tech in Barcelona.

Ahead of the release of its Galaxy S6, Samsung has taken the opportunity to track the development of its smartphone cameras over the years in a blog post titled “The Future of Cameras is in a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone”, fuelling further speculation over potential S6 camera advancements.

“We meticulously evaluate every single facet of our smartphone cameras by taking over 10,000 photos in every imaginable lighting environment for analysis,” the post states.

“The same passion and dedication has been put into building the cameras for the release of our 2015 flagship model.”

Samsung further states it “will demonstrate just how far Samsung has advanced smartphone cameras”.

SamMobile has recently reported a source as having seen an S6 prototype featuring a 20 MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation and a 5 MP front camera.

Both sensors are made by Samsung, SamMobile reported, with the rear camera to take photos in 20 MP (5952 x 3348), 15 MP (4464 x 3348), 11 MP (3344 x 3344), 8 MP (3264 x 2448), 6 MP (3264 x 1836) and 2.4 MP (2048 x 1152) resolution, with the front-facing camera the same camera as found on the Galaxy A series.

Samsung is using Android 5.0 Lollipop’s new APIs to offer a Pro mode in the camera app, according to the report, which will provide the option to choose between three focus modes, including a manual focus mode, with other possible advanced options including the ability to save RAW images and control the shutter speed.

Whether the 20 MP camera will make the final device is unclear, with SamMobile reporting this will be dependent on a range of factors, including the sensor’s price.

Meanwhile, HTC is also is expected to unveil a significant camera upgrade for its next-generation HTC One (M9)/Hima.

Recent rumours suggest this may see HTC moving away from the UltraPixel concept employed in the HTC One (M8).

HTC Rom developer LlabTooFeR recently tweeted about potential details of the handset, including the possibility HTC may also opt for a 20 MP main camera.

“On HTC Hima we might see 20 MP Toshiba T4KA7 as the main camera module,” LlabTooFeR tweeted.

Of course, HTC could well opt for an UltraPixel front camera in conjunction with a 20 MP rear camera, with a Bloomberg report last month indicating that could be the case.

While the set-up may vary, rumours certainly suggest a 20 MP rear camera is on the cards for HTC’s M9, and it could well be that both the M9 and S6 will be sporting 20 MP cameras.
