Sex Workers Boycott Grand Theft Auto

U.S. Conservatives have found an unlikely ally in their fight to ban Grand Theft Auto: prostitutes.

Gamespot.com reports that the new, ahem, bedfellows, share the aim of getting Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas off retail shelves.

The Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP) is reportedly basing its protests on a National Institute on Media and the Family paper and is calling “On all parents and all gamers to boycott Grand Theft Auto”. The SWOP Website says that “In the interest of promoting the rights of sex workers, the organisation is opposed to the depiction of the rape and murder of prostitutes.”

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas depicts violence, including homicide, against prostitutes, and virtually all other characters. In the game, players can solicit “services” from prostitutes but cannot actively rape prostitutes. A possible rape is reportedly alluded to once during the storyline.

The City of Los Angeles has sued makers of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Take-Two Entertainment, for hiding pornographic material in the game that can be unlocked by downloading a widely available game mod from the Internet.
