Sonos To Get Apple Music But Not Till Later This Year

Sonos has become the first wireless audio company to formally announce that they have cut a deal to stream Apple Music however the service will be part of a major software updated tipped for later this year.

“Apple Music will be integrated like our other music services into the Sonos app and will be able to be streamed from the Internet to any or every room of a home,” a Sonos spokesperson said.

“We are the first hardware supplier to be noted by Apple for support of their service. Apple Music launches June 30. Sonos already lets users listen to their computer’s iTunes library through the Sonos app, which doesn’t allow for streaming of Apple’s current iTunes Radio service.

The app, however, does allow for streaming of the Beats music service, which Apple bought last year.

Ex Beats Music CEO and now Apple Music senior director Ian Rogers tweeted the following in response to a request for Sonos partnership: “It will be ASAP, but not at launch.” he wrote.

“We are big fans of Apple, so we would of course embrace them any time they want to come into the home, but I think that will be the next priority for them,” explained the company’s chief executive John MacFarlane, speaking earlier this month.

He added: “You have to earn Apple’s cooperation, they don’t just give it to you for free, but if there’s a delightful user experience and it makes a lot of sense, I think they do it, and there’s lots of examples of that. I think if it’s less than that, then they don’t.”

Apple Music is set to launch tomorrow as part of the iOS 8.4 update, bringing with it a new 24/7 radio station called Beats 1.
